Okay, I always find it a little odd that people consider Super Princess Peach sexist because the gimmick revolves around Princess Peach having emotion based abilities. I see people make mood swing jokes and PMS jabs whenever it’s brought up. These are people who obviously have never actually played Super Princess Peach.

I have played Super Princess Peach. I own it, and have 100% completed it. Let me tell you what the actual plot of this game is. Bowser has gone to Vibe Island and steals a magic item called the Vibe Scepter, and then uses it to render everyone in the Mushroom Kingdom overly emotional and defenseless.

Mario and Luigi? Useless and easily captured.

Peach? IMMUNE. See, as it turns out, Peach, rather than being treated as “overly emotional”, is actually so on top of her emotions that instead of being rendered hysterical while on Vibe Island, she gets magic emotion powers that she can control at will. So she gets herself a talking umbrella, beats up of a bunch of dudes, and then eventually slaps the shit out of a giant Bowser.

Peach saves Mario and Luigi and her entire kingdom by being the only goddamn person around who can keep her feelings in check.

BECAUSE THAT’S HOW SUPER PRINCESS PEACH ROLLS.

So, some notes on Big Boss’s personality now that all the story chapters of the Drama CD have been translated. I knew roughly what was going on before and have been drawing my characterization from it, but damn it’s so nice to finally have a word-for-word translation and being able to extrapolate from it. Edit: Some talk of abusive behavior, you have been warned.

Good point! And I agree. This line of thought reaches its climax in MG2 when we play from Snake’s perspective and we really see how fundamenally fucked up Big Boss is. I have many, many more thoughts when it comes to Big Boss’s mental state and how we’re probably not seeing it for what it is, but if I wrote it all down it would easily reach essay length and I’d rather only write those for uni, haha.

One thing to consider, though: Given how BB grew up—with the Boss—and his general awkward behavior regarding relationships, his concept of love and how to show it seems to be very warped (and this is MGS, where it’s considered an act of love to fight and kill each other when it becomes necessary). He and the Boss certainly didn’t cuddle the whole day; they were probably sparring and she beat him up regularly so he’d get better. She also explicitly mentions that he was trained by her not to break during torture, and I can’t imagine that torture training would be pleasant at all. In short, I do believe that he has come to associate violence (and probably the pain resulting from it) with love just as much as he associates it with hatred, if not more so. And even if it’s ultimately not really his fault, it doesn’t make him any less fucked up. It explains why he so casually beats Kaz up in the drama CD, instead of talking things over with him—hell, he seems to actively provoke a fight, already knowing that Kaz is lying. But when he doesn’t fess up, he continues to mess with him until BB explodes.

And regarding MGSV, I’ve actually made a post a while ago regarding the Moby Dick symbolism found in it. If you go by that, yeah, Big Boss will be portrayed as an obsessive tyrant, which seems in accordance with his drama CD portrayal.

I want this on my blog again for posterity, because of further comments and insights.
